Video Chat

 Answers:

What is Qik Video Chat?

Qik Video Chat, a feature of the Qik application, lets you do 2-way video with your friends from your mobile phone to their mobile phone. To do this both the parties require to have Qik applications that have Video Chat capabilities enabled.

To start video chat, open the Qik application, select the person you'd like to video chat with from your phone address book and that's it.

  • If the recipient has the Qik application with video chat capabilities, they'll hear a ringtone with the ability to accept the video chat session. If the recipient accept the video chat session, both of you are instantly placed into a video chat.
  • If the recipient does not have the Qik application with video chat capabilities or does not have the Qik application on their phone, they receive an SMS with a link to watch the video live from their mobile browser.

Which phones are supported for Qik Video Chat?

Currently Qik Video Chat is available today on the Sprint HTC EVO 4G and the Sprint Samsung Epic.  We'll be rolling out Video Chat to more phones soon.

How do I get Qik Video Chat? How do I sign up?

If you have the Sprint HTC EVO, download the application called "Qik for HTC EVO 4G" from the Android Market.

If you have the Sprint Samsung EPIC, download the Qik Video application.  The app will automatically detect that you have the Sprint Samsung Epic and enable the Video Chat ability.

To sign up, open the application and then:

  • If you don't have a Qik account, click "Create" and enter all the fields to create a new Qik account.
  • If you already have an account, click Sign In and then enter your username and password to sign in.

How can I video chat with someone?

To start video chat, open the Qik application and tap Video Chat. Then you'll be taken to a screen that shows the list of your contacts from your phone address book.

  • Wait for the connectivity indicator to turn green
  • Tap the name of the person from the list to start a video chat with them. You can also enter the Qik username of the other person to start a video chat with that person.

Does the other person need to have a Qik application enabled with Qik Video Chat to do a Video Chat?

  • If the recipient has the Qik application with video chat capabilities, they'll hear a ringtone with the ability to accept the video chat session. If the recipient accept the video chat session, both of you are instantly placed into a video chat.
  • If the recipient does not have the Qik application with video chat capabilities or does not have the Qik application on their phone, they receive an SMS with a link to watch the video live from their mobile browser.

I don't see a microphone when I start the chat session, but the other person does. Why?

To enable better audio communication between the 2 users, the person who was invited to the video chat session sees a microphone. This person can talk back by pressing and holding the microphone. When the person pressing and holding the microphone is speaking, the other person who initiated the call cannot talk back. Only when the person leaves the microphone can the person who initiated the call talk back.

This mode of communication is used such that it can easily scale to enable multiple party video chatting down the road.

Can I do video chat on 3G, 4G, WiFi, WiMAX, LTE?

Yes, you can video chat with others across all Cell, WiFi, WiMAX, LTE networks. However, the quality of the video chat is better in 4G and higher networks.

I am getting an error indicating that I am not connected when I try to Video Chat. What should I do?

When you click Video Chat from the Qik application, make sure that the connectivity indicator turns green before starting a video chat with someone.

If you are not able to connect to server, make sure you have the latest version of Qik installed. Try rebooting your phone. If you are still unsuccessful in connecting to the server, send a support request.
